So THAT’S How They Make These? I’m Trying This!

Welcome to PAGE TWO of the Melted Bead Suncatchers Tutorial. Now that you have your material list and supplies handy, it’s time to learn how to make a melted bead suncatcher. Just follow the steps below, reading them through one time first as you will have some choices to make before you begin. Everything is outlined below.

I like changing things up and using tiny pony beads instead of the usual larger ones for a different effect as you will see further on in this tutorial. You will also see lots of photo examples to give you some good ideas on designs. I prefer transparent beads but you can also use solid colored beads as well.

Instructions:

  1. Depending on the size beads you choose determines the thickness of the layer of beads you need. If your using regular size pony beads as shown in figure 1 below, a single layer of beads in your pan is all you need. If your using tiny pony beads as shown in figure 2 below, you will need a much thicker layer of beads to avoid breakage after melting.
    * At this point you will also need to decide if you are going to use a small cookie cutter or other object to create a hole in the center or if you’re going to drill a hole at the end. If you choose to use an object to create the hole, you will need to add it to your pan of beads near the top and the beads will melt around it creating a hole to hang it with.

  2. Arrange your beads in your baking pan as described in step one for the size beads you are using. If you are making a certain pattern, arrange the beads accordingly to create your design.
  3. Melting the beads:
    * If your using an oven, set it between 375 and 400 degrees fahrenheit and melt for 20-30 minutes until fully melted. (oven temps vary).
    * If you are choosing to melt your beads out in the grill, this speeds up the process and only needs to bake for 10-15 minutes until fully melted. This method is preferred to avoid filling your home with the awful smell of plastic.
  4. Once baking is complete, set aside to cool completely
  5. Once cooled, remove the suncatcher from the pan, it should come right out when you turn the pan upside down. If not, just tap on the back of the pan to help release it.
  6. At this point, if you used an object like a cookie cutter or nut to make your hole, pop that out now. If you did not use an object to make a hole, then its time to drill a small hole near the top of your suncatcher (not too close to the top to avoid chipping)
  7. Hang and ENJOY!
