[Video] How To Make Fragrant Mini DIY Watermelon Candles

I get a lot of requests for candle craft DIY projects and this tutorial for making fragrant mini DIY Watermelon Candles can be used indoors or out. You can add citronella fragrance to these and they will repel mosquito’s and other annoying flying bugs or you can add watermelon fragrance for delicious smelling indoor candles that will also add a splash of beautiful color to your home decor.

What you will need:

  • small paper cups
  • 3 glass mixing bowls
  • wicks with metal bases
  • soy or other premium candle wax
  • citronella for outdoor bug repellant
  • watermelon fragrance for indoor use
  • candle dye – red and green (can use crayon but dye is best)
  • black craft paint
  • glue gun or use hot wax to affix your wicks
  • rubbing alcohol in spray bottle

Instructions:

Begin by melting your wax in 3 separate bowls. To make 4-5 small candles you will need approximately 3 cups of red wax, and 2 cups each for the white and green wax. The amount you need will depend on the size of your paper cups. Melt your wax in either a double boiler or in the microwave. If you use the microwave, heat the wax in 30 second increments, stirring in between until all the wax is melted. Once melted, add your fragrance and red and green dye to each bowl and leave the last bowl with clear wax. Be sure to mix well so the colors and the fragrance mixes well with the wax.

Next, begin securing your wicks to the center of your paper cups with either hot glue or hot wax.

Starting with your green wax, pour about 1/4 full for each cup. Give a quick spray with the rubbing alcohol between each color and allow each color to set before beginning the next color layer.

Next pour in the clear wax, just a small amount like 1/2 inch. Then another quick spray of alcohol.

Now pour in the red wax to 1/4 inch below the rim of the cup.

Once the wax has set, cut your wicks to 1/2 to 3/4 inch above the wax. Then snip a cut into the paper cup and begin peeling the paper cup away from the candle.

Lastly, use your black craft paint to add seed around the side of the red wax to decorate it.

That’s it.. light it and enjoy!
