I found the cutest craft project for making a Salt Dough Footprint Heart by Amy Louise on ‘Red Ted Art’ that is actually geared towards Valentine’s day. But this can be a wonderful gift or personal keepsake for any time of the year. I absolutely love this idea and want to share it with you.
Salt Dough is a craft medium that many people use to make all sorts of things. It hardens like clay and is very easy to work with.
What you will need:
- 2 cups of flour
- 1 cup of salt
- up to 1 cup of water
- rolling pin
- sharp knife or x-acto knife
- red acrylic paint
- paint brush
- black fine tip sharpie
Instructions:
Mix the flour, salt and gradually add water mixing as you go to form a dough.
Roll out the dough on a tray to desired thickness, do not make too thin.
Overlap the child’s heels to create a heart shape like the image below.

Using a sharp knife, cut a heart out around the footprints. Leave it sit to air dry for 24 hours.
After 24 hours, bake in the oven at 125 degrees for 3-4 hours watching close to be sure it is not burning or cracking.
Once cooled, paint the footprints with red acrylic paint (or color of your choice) and allow to dry
Once dry, use the sharpie to write a sentiment around the outer edges of the heart. Amy used the saying: “I love you from the very bottom of my heart to the tips of my toes.” But you can use any sentiment you’d like.
